DODGE CITY – David Eugene Burton, Sr., 67, took his last ride on the highway to heaven on June 21, 2022. He succumbed to his injuries he received from a motorcycle accident in Grove, Oklahoma.

David was born May 27, 1955 the son of Houston David and Ruth Mary (Coghill) Burton in Garden City, Kansas. During the first 5 years of his life he lived in Lakin, Kansas and Jay, Oklahoma. The family then moved to Dodge City in 1960. He attended Sunnyside Elementary School, Dodge City Junior High, and Dodge City High School class of 1973. He worked at W.W Manufacturing as an oil field welder, he later became an over the road truck driver eventually becoming an owner/operator hauling out of Kansas feeds.

David had a passion for riding his Harley's and road trips to Sturgis with friends, and his beloved Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed reading and watching various TV shows and most of all loved his family time. David loved his sons so much he would never move too far. He treated his brother and sisters special, as if each one was his favorite. He was also a great listener and friend. Dave was very wise and an even better listener and friend. He shared his wisdom he had with everyone. He was known to have a teasing manner – twinkling eyes, a quick smile and a very loving man.

David married Liz Smith on June 21, 1975 together they raised 3 sons; David Jr., Derek, and Daniel. They later divorced in 1984.

Survivors include: his 3 sons, David Jr., Derek and Daniel Burton all of Dodge City, Kansas; brother, Larry Burton and wife Laura, Dyersburg, Tennessee; 4 sisters, Charlotte Wallace, Shelbina, Missouri, Rose Sober and husband Greg, Arkansas City, Kansas, Lori Stout, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Sandra Neely, Meade, Kansas; 6 grandchildren, Shawn, Makayla, Ryan, Brooklynn, Gracie, and Joshua; and multiple nieces and nephews; aunt, Joyce Edwards, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and an uncle, Ken Burton, Jay, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Sam Burton, and an uncle, Gene Coghill, who died June 24, 2022; and his life long best friends, Ernie and Alan.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 1, 2022 at 10:00 am at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City with Jeff Hiers officiating. Burial will follow in Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City. Visitation will be Thursday from noon to 5:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel.
