Obituary

DODGE CITY – Donald "Don" Determann, 78, entered his heavenly reward on Friday, December 25, 2020.

Don was born October 27, 1942 in Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Esther (Bond) Determann.

He was a graduate of Ida Grove High School, joining the Navy in 1960 when he served aboard a wooden-hulled mine sweeper – the USS Ability (MS0-519).  In 1962, the Ability supported the quarantine of Cuba brought about by the siting of offensive Soviet missiles on that island.  The Ability began that duty patrolling the Windward Passage, but concluded it as a harbor defense ship for the American base at Guantanamo Bay.

In the Navy, he received Class A & B School and was a Navy Electrician until 1964, when his career in the Meat Packing Industry began. True to his form for the rest of his life, he took college courses in English and Literature; Math and Chemistry; Algebra, Biology and Earth Science, as well as Mechanical Engineering.  He completed 2 years of college, but those who knew him were aware of his insatiable appetite for learning. His love of reading led him to study many subjects, including the Bible, Physics, History, Health & Nutrition.  He was also known for the many notes that he kept and passed on to others, as well as his common sense and witty expressions.

Don was the Corporate Staff Engineer for National Beef since 1998.  He loved his job and the people he worked with.  He was grateful for the opportunities given to him and the relationships made throughout the years.

Don had several other personal interests.  He enjoyed life and was an optimist at every level.  He enjoyed power-lifting and held several records, having received many trophies even as of late, in his age division.  His 'vacations' consisted of annual trips to Sturgis on his custom chopper until he purchased a BMW motorcycle, then a Triumph and ultimately another BMW, of which he was very pleased.

Don's desire to study the Bible led him to graduate from Rhema Bible College Correspondence School.  He often said that his desire was to serve in the church taking care of the natural things, so that his pastors could take care of the supernatural things.  Therefore, he faithfully and truly held the office of deacon for 22 years at ALFC, serving and training in the Usher Department.  He taught Sunday School, and impacted many young people who will never forget his generosity and thoughtfulness. His love for the Bible led him to the study of End Time events and he especially enjoyed conversations about the subject.  Don's faithfulness and commitment to his church was witnessed by all, and for such he will be greatly missed.

On September 26, 1987, he married Jeanie Maxwell and made it his life's passion to keep her happy. She survives.

Don is also survived by 2 daughters, Theresa and Heather; and his brother, Robert Determann, Dodge City, Kansas.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Betty Determann, Peggy Determann and Janice Lux.
