Doris Arlene
Jantzen
Sep 13, 1936 — Dec 10, 2019
Our mother and grandmother, Doris Arlene Koehn (Jantzen) was born on September 13, 1936 to Roy and Edna Koehn on the family farm one mile west of where the Cimarron Mennonite Church stands today. She was the 4 th of twelve children and she together with her folks and siblings moved often in their early years. They moved to California in January of 1953 when Mom was 16 years old.
Mom answered the call of God when she was 11 years old and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite by Minister David J Koehn at Montezuma, Kansas on May 23, 1948. While Mom had her struggles, she remained true to the faith till the end.
She was married to our father, Elden Bern Jantzen, on June 7, 1953 by minister Abe T. Koehn and shortly afterward they moved to Larned, KS where Dad put in his 1W service. After their days in the service folks moved back to California where they lived till March of 1958. They then returned to Cimarron where they lived till 2004. In 2004 they moved to Montezuma where they spent the rest of their lives together. Dad passed away on December 5, 2009.
In 1970, with 6 children at home aged 9 to 15, Mom started nurses training at the Dodge City Community College. She graduated 3 rd in her class and was awarded a special award of praying hands by her classmates for her exceptional ability to get along with people, as well as her outstanding work of raising a family while attending school.
Mom worked as an LPN at the Dodge City Hospital, and then went to work at the nursing home in Cimarron where she endeared herself to the staff and residents with her her warm, caring heart. She worked there for over 20 years, and then finished her nursing career working at Bethel Home in Montezuma. She had a soft heart for those needing a friend or help.
Mom was known for her good cooking ability, and we as a family as well as many others, often enjoyed her delicious fried or baked chicken, spaghetti, home made bread and pizza.
Some of Moms special pleasures were feeding birds, raising flowers, and collecting salt and pepper shakers. Her special love was the amaryllis flower, and she often pointed them out to us.
While Mom was a quiet, unassuming person, her personality was of such that she won many friends. And especially endeared herself to the staff at Bethel Home, both while working there, and later as a resident.
Those left to mourn her passing are her sons Rodney and wife Kathy, Ed and wife Jacque, both of Cimarron, Kansas , Forrest and wife Marva of Henderson, Tennessee, Mike and wife Barbara, Troy and wife Debra, both of Cimarron and daughters Rebecca of Cimarron, and Rosemary of Montezuma; as well as fifteen grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren, three great, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Sisters Hazel and husband Harvey, and Vada Cressey, California; Delilah and husband Ernie, Atwater, California; Mildred and husband Wilmont, Buhl, Idaho; Glenda , Kathy and husband Al, California. Brothers in law, Melvin Jantzen of Moundridge, Kansas; Nelson and wife Pat, Montezuma, Kansas; Kenneth and wife Margaret, Tulsa, Oklahoma; one sister in law Lavina Schmidt, Montezuma, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and two brothers. The family wishes to express a special thank-you to the staff at Bethel Home for the loving care of their Mother.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 am Sunday, December 15, 2019 at the Church of God In Christ Mennonite, Cimarron. Burial will follow in the Cimarron Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 3:30 pm to 4:30 at Bethel Home and 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm Friday with the family present at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Cimarron.
The family suggests memorials to Bethel Home in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 446, Cimarron, Kansas 67835.
