Obituary

Estel "Wayne" Lindsey, 82 passed away peacefully on October 9, 2024, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Wayne was born in Dodge City, Kansas on April 27, 1942, to Oakford and Doris Speer. Wayne graduated from Dodge City High School in 1960, where his love of sports grew, playing football and baseball. After graduating from Pittsburg State University, he married Carolyn (Crussell) Lindsey, and they began a wonderful journey of 60 years together. With his wife by his side and working together on many occasions, Wayne began his career in education.

Wayne and Carolyn welcomed twin boys, Michael and Mark, in 1968 and the adventures continued as Wayne earned his master's degree at Fort Hays State, with the boys and their big wheels bikes in tow. He dedicated his life to being a coach, teacher, principal, superintendent, a mentor to many and sometimes even the bus driver in Kansas and Colorado. Wayne was a deeply religious man and always put his trust in God to guide him in life. He loved playing the harmonica and delighted everyone with a tune at any given moment. He loved to tinker on motors of any kind, always working on something in his garage. It was not surprising that his last words to his son Mark were "I think it's the spark plug". Wayne didn't know a stranger; he would stop and talk to everyone. His sense of humor would leave strangers and friends in laughs and wonder. He once convinced his mother-in-law that she could no longer shop at Walmart after having a pacemaker put in because she would set off the alarm system. When it came time for grandchildren, there wasn't a prouder Grandpa – from taking Desarae to have coffee with the guys to show her off and introducing her to coffee on road trips, trying to confuse Michael about Milo, while trying to teach Bridget not to bite people, he bit her back and his dentures fell out and teaching Blake it was ok to pee outside on truck tires. He enjoyed spending time with them. As the family grew, he always welcomed them with open arms and a good joke or two. Wayne loved to spend time with family and friends hunting fishing, camping and riding ATV's. Wayne retired to Canon City, Colorado to help Carolyn take care of her mother and later helped raise 3 great grandchildren: Leona, Camilla and Ryder Lindsey.

Wayne is survived by his wife Carolyn, son's Mark (Kathleen) Lindsey and Michael Lindsey all of Canon City, Colorado; Grandchildren, Victoria (Jaclyn) Fair, Desarae Lindsey, Michael (Brandi) Lindsey, Bridget Bidwell and Blake (Susie) Lindsey; nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Wayne was proceeded in death by his parents, Oakford and Doris Speer and sister, Jackie Wright.
