Obituary

CIMARRON - Flor de Maria Diaz, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in the early morning of May 18, 2025, at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron, Kansas. She was 87 years old.

Flor was born on June 12, 1937, in Havana, Cuba. At just 18 years old, she bravely journeyed to the United States, soon to marry and begin a family. Her first son, David, was born on January 25, 1956, followed closely by her second son, Daniel, on April 22, 1957. As a proud military wife, Flor traveled to many places, but Okinawa, Japan, remained her favorite. In 1963, the family settled in Haysville, Kansas, where she would build a lasting life.

Later, Flor welcomed her daughter, Denise, and began her working career in a greenhouse, where she discovered a deep love for flowers. Her journey continued in the aircraft industry, where she built altimeters for radar systems at Kollsman. Even after retiring, Flor's commitment to service never wavered—she spent 10 years working with the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels, helping those in need and making lifelong friends along the way.

Flor had an undeniable spark. She loved God, her church, cooking for her family, baking her famous brownies, planting flowers, crocheting hats and scarves for those she loved, and, of course, shopping. She had a flair for life—always wearing sun glasses, bright colors, and fancy shoes. Her warm spirit could light up a room, and her Cuban sass meant you always knew where you stood.

Flor is survived by her daughter, Denise Miller, and her husband Mark; her daughter-in-law Joette Diaz; her grandchildren David and Jen Diaz, Rosa and Josh Weaver, Danny Diaz, Shandria High and Ossie Prim, Austin and Amy Diaz, Sara Diaz and Kato Comer, McKayla Miller, and Mace Miller; her great-grandchildren Elena Diaz, Abigail Diaz, Trey Diaz, Wyatt Weaver, Noah Weaver, Stella Weaver, Kyaira SanMiguel, Anaya Diaz, Aidan Diaz, Ajay Diaz, and Korianna Comer; and great-great-grandchildren Derek Jr. Diaz, Dayton Diaz, and Annalisa Ortega.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sons, David and Daniel Diaz, grandson, Derek Diaz, stepdaughter, Stacey Ripper and daughter-in-law, Denise Diaz.

A celebration of Flor's life will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at the Haysville United Methodist Church. There will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place.

Flor lived her life with courage, kindness, and color. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
