MONTEZUMA - Hazel Marie Russell (Homewood), of Montezuma, Kansas, departed this life peacefully at the Shepherd Center, in Cimarron, Kansas on September 7, 2025 at the age of 98.

Born November 15, 1926, in Luray, Kansas. Hazel lived life on her own terms, with a bold spirit and a knack for getting things done – sometimes with elbows out. Her relentless pursuit of what she believed in was matched only by her ability to surprise, challenge, and inspire those around her. Hazel worked 30 years as the USPS postmaster in Montezuma, Kansas before retiring.

Hazel spent her final years in the Shepherd's Center, where she continued to bless those around her with her clever wit and wisdom. She enjoyed sitting and laughing with the other residents and staff and loved a good joke.

She is survived by five grandchildren: Michael Ayres, Brian Ayres, Terri Plaisance (Hoskinson), Ryan Hoskinson, and Elizabeth Marshall (Basham); and nine great-grandchildren.

A small private gathering with family will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Shepherd's Center, in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave, Dodge City, Kansas. 67801.
