Obituary

CIMARRON - Lynne Elizabeth Hewes passed away on November 6, 2023, at Bethel Home, Montezuma, Kansas.

She was born on February 5, 1948, in Port Arthur, Texas, the daughter of Elizabeth (Young) Miller and Rex E. Miller.  She grew up in Southwest Oklahoma, graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and later earned her Master's Degree in English from Fort Hays State University.

Lynne and Dan Hewes were married on July 25, 1991. They lived in Wellington, Kansas before moving back to Cimarron, Kansas.

Lynne taught English, Speech, and Journalism at Belle Plaine High School, Copeland High School, Ingalls High School, Montezuma High School, and Cimarron High School. She taught college composition and speech classes for Butler County Community College, Cowley County Community College, and Dodge City Community College and English language classes for Forget-Me-Not Dairy. She also prepared writing materials and presented workshops for Adult Basic Education teachers in Kansas and Nebraska for several years. During her later years, she was a reporter and feature writer for the Montezuma Press.

All who knew her would agree that she was an independent free-spirited soul who radiated kindness to everyone she met. Lynne never knew a stranger and always saw the best in everyone. She was truly a teacher at heart, continuing to her last days to teach us all about compassion, respect, dignity and showing grace to one another.

Lynne enjoyed teaching writing and literature, gardening, visiting with good friends, interviewing, and writing stories about Southwest Kansas people, watercolor painting, old dogs, doing cooking or art projects with her grandchildren, Friday night dinners with family, and area history. She and the Gray County Historical Society created detailed histories of many old buildings in Cimarron as well as history articles about other towns in Gray County. She also researched and wrote history articles for the Western Kansas Cattle Trail Association. Her writing is on display in the form of children's history stories at Cimarron Crossing Park and at Wright Park in Dodge City.

She is survived by her son Michael Ogles and wife Jennifer, grandchildren Andi Ogles and Ethan Ogles and a cousin David Young and wife Susan.  Family passing before her were her husband Dan, her mother and father, and her sister Jean Miller.
