He was born July 7, 1945 in Dalhart, Texas to Kelsie and WillieEthel (Small) Young.  He spent his youth in Dalhart graduating high school in 1963.  He did ranch work until returning to college at Panhandle State University in Goodwill, Oklahoma.  Upon graduation he immediately went to Oklahoma State University, receiving his Masters Degree.  His 45 year teaching career began at Clay County High School.  5 years later he moved to Pratt Community College, eventually ending up at Dodge City Community College.  His 37 years at DC3 began with Paul in the Ag Department, eventually spending 33 years teaching traditional economics.  He wrote his own textbook and took pride in instilling basic knowledge of economics in his students.  During his time there he coached rodeo on 2 separate occasions, serving on the national board of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.  He took much pride in seeing students become successful in society.  He retired in July 2017.

After the rodeo coach part of life, he traded a real horse for a "hog". He rode several motorcycles with many Dodge City friends, and also toured solo.  He, at various times, rode border to border and coast to coast.  He made friends wherever he traveled.

In 1989 Kay (Stauth) and Paul "ran away" across the street and were married in the United Methodist Church in Dodge City.  This marriage blended 2 families, 1 son and 3 daughters.  These include son, Shannon Stauth (Jan) and their children, Andrew Burkhart (Shannon), Tanner Burkhart (Katie), Taryn Stauth (Tyler Cornell) and Braden Stauth; daughter, Alisha Stauth Ontiberos (Brent Anderson) and children, Jaycie Ontiberos (Caleb Conyers), Jordan Ontiberos and Ty Ontiberos; daughter, Amanda Young Mische (Chad) and their children, Lucas, Clayton and Garrett; daughter, Rebecca Young; 8 great grandchildren; and his brother, Kent Young.
