Ron
Elliot
May 29, 1953 — Jan 13, 2025
DODGE CITY – Ron Elliot, 71, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 13, 2025 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City.
Born on May 29, 1953, in Dodge City to Alvin L. and Leona M. (Wondra) Elliot, Ron was a lifelong resident who left a permanent mark on his community. A proud graduate of Dodge City High School, Class of 1971, Ron cherished his hometown and its people.
At 19, Ron ventured to California, where fate played its hand in the form of a serendipitous meeting with Cherie Cure. Their love story began like something out of a movie, culminating in their wedding on June 2, 1972, at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California. Together, they shared 52 years of love, laughter and a life well lived.
Ron began his career as a carpenter before following his true calling in law enforcement. In 1982, he joined the Dodge City Police Department, embarking on a journey that would profoundly impact countless lives. Promoted to sergeant in 1986, Ron found his true passion as a D.A.R.E officer in 1991. He became a beloved figure in local schools, teaching children about making safe and positive life choices. Officer Elliot retired in 2010, but his legacy of service, kindness, and mentorship lives on in the hearts of those he served.
A man of faith, Ron was a dedicated member of St. Cornelius Episcopal Church, where he supported the youth group and contributed selflessly to his community.
Ron was a race car enthusiast who often joked that if not for "having to grow up," he might have pursued a career as a professional race car driver. An avid photographer, he was rarely seen without a camera, capturing countless memories and documenting the lives of those around him.
Above all, Ron's greatest joy was helping others. As a foster parent, he changed the lives of many children, providing love, stability and hope. He was the kind of person who would quietly give the shirt off his back or the last dime in his pocket to someone in need, earning him the affectionate title of "one of the good guys" who worked in the background.
In retirement, Ron found peace in nature, kayaking on the lake, chopping wood, and sharing adventures with his loved ones. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Known for his playful spirit, he loved singing, playing games, and creating cherished one of a kind memories with his family. He became an honorary father and grandfather figures to many embodying his favorite name "Papa."
Ron is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cherie; four children; Robert J. Elliot (Wichita), Joshua C. Elliot (Lawrence), Jade Elliot Schaffer and husband Patrick (Dodge City), and Taya Elliot and fiance Dan Ovesea (Lowell Arkansas); bonus daughter Terri Trent and husband Kerry (Dodge City); four grandchildren Aidan and Aaron Trent and Mason and Bryar Schaffer; two sisters; Sharyl Johnson and husband David and Diane Law and husband Danny (both of Dodge City); and his brother Robert A. Elliot (Wichita).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Leona.
