Obituary

DODGE CITY - Stanley “Stan” Ernest Winn, 78, peacefully went to be with his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, on August 14, 2026 at his home.

Stan was born in Wichita, Kansas at the St. Francis Hospital on January 5, 1948 to his parents, Kathie (Britton) and Ernie Winn.

Stan graduated from Campus High School in 1966. He went to Friends University of Wichita and Gulf Coast Bible College in Houston, TX. (Now known as Mid America Christian University in Oklahoma City, OK.) Stan was very active throughout his entire life in vocal and instrumental music, especially in high school and college. After college he continued his love for music as an expression of his love for God at West Side Church of God in Wichita. He was involved at West Side in many ministries and activities over the years. He served on committees, boards, as a Sunday School teacher, in the Bus Ministry, choir, in special music, puppet ministry and many other ministries throughout the 63 years he attended West Side. He treasured the experiences and loved the wonderful people there.

Stan worked in many fields, but was best known for working at TG&Y, Cessna Aircraft Company and Sam’s Club of West Wichita. After his tenure at TG&Y, he worked at Cessna, but after a few layoffs, decided to return to the retail scene. He hired on at Sam’s Club as a stocker and after several years, became a door greeter. This position allowed him to become friends with many, many people from so many various walks of life across Kansas and Oklahoma. Stan was employed there for 27 years, retiring in 2014.

While employed at TG&Y, Stan met Edith Elizabeth “Liz” Stapleton. They dated for about 12 years before marrying on October 20, 1989 at the West Side Church of God. They were so thankful of having two daughters by the grace and love of God. Stan and Liz loved and supported each other, able to communicate with each other, even when Stan came to a time when he could not speak. The mere squeeze of her hand said so very, very much.

In retirement, Stan and Liz moved to Dodge City, Kansas. He lived on “the farm”, enjoying the animals, the sunsets, and the openness of the countryside.

His pastimes included fishing, working crossword puzzles, listening to and singing with gospel quartet music, watching birdlife and being around cherished family and friends.

They enjoyed being involved and attending the First Church of God of Dodge City, Kansas. until his passing.

Survivors include his spouse, Liz, of the home; two daughters, Kristin Winn of Wichita, and Sami Mitchell of Dodge City; two sisters, Jo Lopez and Judy Teague, both of Opelika, Alabama; two brothers, David (Kim) Winn of La Mirada, California and Clark (Dawn) Winn of Wichita; three grandchildren, Braxton, Jayden and Ava. He has several nieces and nephews that were dear to him. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 am Wednesday. August 19, 2026 at the First Church of God with Pastor Mason Smith and Rev. David Winn officiating. Burial will follow in Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City. Visitation will be Tuesday from noon to 8:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.
