Virginia 'Ginny"
Sue Mcphail
Sep 23, 1944 — Jan 13, 2026
CIMARRON -Virginia Sue (Deewall) McPhail passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Bethel Home in Montezuma, Kansas. She was holding the hand of her husband of sixty-two years as she let go to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. After a long illness, she was freed from the chains of this world and welcomed into perpetual light.
Virginia, fondly known as Ginny, was born on September 23, 1944, to Leroy and Dorothy (Basnett) Deewall in Ashland, Kansas. The youngest of three daughters, she grew up on the family farm in Coldwater, Kansas. Ginny worked alongside her daddy raising sheep and Hereford cattle, proudly owned many horses, and did everything "a boy could do." At just twelve years old, she bought her own saddle and had her name placed on the back—an early sign of the independence and strength that stayed with her throughout her life.
She attended school in Coldwater and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1962.
On August 31, 1963, Ginny married her sweetheart, Clifton McPhail, in Ashland, Kansas. Together they began their life on the family farm, where they had four daughters. After moving to Minneola, Kansas, they made their permanent home in Cimarron, Kansas, where they raised six children and established McPhail Oil and Supply, serving the surrounding communities for over forty years. Ginny was the heart of her family. She was present at every game, concert, swim meet, and track meet—always the loudest cheerleader in the stands. Her home was full of activity, yet she managed it all with humor, grace, and unwavering love.
She was a devoted lover of large dogs and proudly owned several award-winning malamutes throughout her life. Always active, Ginny was an avid runner and completed three marathons. Her third marathon, completed at the age of 51, was run alongside her daughters, Mandi and Melissa. Affectionately known as Grammy, Ginny was blessed with thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, each of whom she loved deeply.
Cliff and Virginia's love story is one for the ages. Married for 62 years, they shared life fully and faithfully. In retirement, they cherished their time at their home on Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma, often spending months there together. If you ever had the pleasure of watching them dance, you witnessed the true meaning of "when two become one."
Virginia—Ginny, Mother, and Grammy—will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Virginia is survived by her husband, Cliff McPhail; daughters, Marci (Ryan) Robertson of Rockwall, Texas; Melissa (Mike) Miller of Montezuma, Kansas; and Marla Byer of Peoria, Arizona; sons, Matt (Jenny) McPhail of Grapevine, Texas, and Max (Cathy) McPhail of Andale, Kansas; grandchildren, Jessie (Steven) Kremeier, Jamie Steele, Jarret Steele, Riley (Lee) Calverley, Macey Robertson, Jackson (Madison) Miller, Clifton (Emily) Miller, Cooper Byer, Colten Byer, Mason (Kennedy) McPhail, Ty McPhail, Aiden McPhail, and Logan McPhail; and great-grandchildren, Acres, Kabri, and Wrenley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Mandi Lee (McPhail) Steele; and her two sisters.
