Obituary

DODGE CITY - William “Bill” Francis Hawley of Dodge City, KS passed away on July 1, 2026, 11 days before his 82nd birthday. Bill was born July 12, 1944 at St. Anthony Hospital in Dodge City, KS. He was the son of Cliff Hawley and Dorothy Smiskol Hawley. He attended Dodge City Schools and graduated college from Pittsburg State University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology. While attending school at Pittsburg, he met Karen Turner. They were married June 11, 1966 in Parsons, KS.

After graduating from Pittsburg, Bill and Karen moved to the Kansas City area, where Bill worked as a Process Engineer for Bendix. In 1973, Bill and his family moved to Dodge City to help his parents with the family business. Hawley Brothers started in 1946 as a window blind business. In 1966, the business started selling motorhomes. In August of 1983, Bill’s parents retired and Bill and Karen purchased the business. Bill and Karen owned the business until their retirement in December of 2018. Bill was very committed to the RV industry over his entire career. He was an RVDA director and the Kansas state delegate. He received the RVDA Chairman’s Service Award in 2010 for his work to exempt RV’s from the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau laws. He also participated on the RVDA Parts Task Force for the Committee on Excellence. Despite living 3 hours from a major airport, he never missed a single meeting. He led the effort to lower the personal property tax on RV’s in Kansas. He attended the RVIA show in Louisville for 41 consecutive years, even planning hip surgery around the event one year. In addition to selling RV’s, Bill was one of the charter members of the Dodge City Chapter of the AMBUCS service organization and was licensed as a railroad engineer for a local tourist railroad for several years.

Bill was predeceased by his parents, his older brother Leonard Hawley, and sister-in-law Marjorie Wade Hawley. He is survived by his wife Karen; daughters Tammy (Mike) Shepherd of Shawnee, KS and Joy (George) Hammar of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren Danielle Shepherd, Samantha Shepherd, Gabrielle (Ryan) Clay, Rylee Hammar and Logan Hammar; great grandchildren Michael Jeffery and Will Clay.
